Running for City Council

City Council

The legislative body that governs a city.  Comprised of a minimum of 5 members to as many as 7 members. Mayors in many of Orange County cities are appointed by their peers, while others are elected.

In an off election year, generally 3 seats are up – Presidential – 2 seats

Responsibilities of City Councilmembers - The powers and duties of the Mayor and City Council are contained in state law and City ordinances, resolutions and regulations. In carrying out their statutory duties, the City's elected officials do the following: Establish policies for the effective and efficient delivery of municipal services to the City.

Orange County is comprised of 34 cities governed by 34 City Councils.

Important to note: although the city councils are non-partisan, 31 out of 34 city councils in Orange County are majority Republican and/or Republican only councils.
